If you’re thinking about working from home, you might be wondering how in the world you will be able to focus your mind on your work and be productive when there are so many distractions that pop up around you.
Kids, friends, phone calls, social media, a wandering mind. The list of potential distractions and things that might hinder you from getting work done is endless.
If you already work from home, then you already know first-hand that this is an overwhelming task!
Whether you run a home business, freelance, or work remotely for an employer, the challenges of maintaining focus can be daunting.
In this blog post, I’m going to share some key strategies to help you boost productivity, maintain focus, and achieve your goals while working from home. Many of these I have adopted and use daily to help ME focus on the work that I need to get done. Trust me, I battle this as well, and I’m here to give you all the tips and tricks that I know!

The first thing that you need to do when working from home is to create a dedicated workspace for your “home base” for working. This is ESSENTIAL to optimize focus and productivity.
By designating a specific area in your home solely for work, you create physical and psychological boundaries between your personal and professional life. Having a dedicated workspace helps condition your mind to associate that area with focused work, making it easier to switch into a productive mindset.
When setting up your dedicated workspace, consider factors such as comfort, organization, and an environment that promotes concentration. Choose a quiet area with minimal distractions, away from high-traffic zones in your home. Ensure that your workspace is well-lit and comfortable.
Keep your workspace organized and clutter-free (as much as possible). The old saying, “A cluttered desk is the sign of a genius” may sound good, and may very well be true. But a cluttered desk is also a huge barrier to your mindset, your focus and your productivity.
Take some time to clear and organize your workspace. Invest in storage solutions such as shelves, cabinets, or desk organizers to keep your documents, supplies, and equipment easily accessible and neat.
Having an organized workspace not only saves time searching for essential items (and I can attest to this from experience!), but it truly helps maintain mental clarity and focus.
In addition to having a dedicated work space, personalize your workspace by incorporating elements that inspire and motivate you. Surround yourself with items that reflect your goals, such as motivational quotes, vision boards, or plants. Personal touches can create a positive atmosphere that enhances focus, creativity, and productivity.
By establishing a dedicated workspace and making that area personalized and comfortable to work in, you are creating a physical and mental boundary that signals your brain it is time to work. This enables you to maintain concentration, boost productivity, and achieve your daily work-from-home goals.

Think about when you are MOST focused and “on your game” and use that time to your advantage each day to get things done.

Consider using time-management techniques like the Pomodoro Technique (which we’ll talk more about further down), where you work in focused intervals followed by short breaks.
- Create Rituals: Develop rituals or habits that signal the start and end of your workday. This can include activities like brewing a cup of coffee, taking a short walk, or listening to a specific playlist. Rituals help create a mental transition between your personal life and work life.
- Avoid Procrastination Traps: Identify your most common sources of distractions or procrastination and take proactive measures to minimize them. This may involve turning off social media notifications, using website blockers, or practicing self-discipline by resisting the urge to engage in non-work-related activities. This is a hard one for most people! But making a goal of increasing the things that you do to guard against procrastination will pay off big for you in the long run!
- Time Blocking: Utilize time-blocking (sometimes called time-chunking) techniques to allocate specific time slots for different tasks or projects. Mapping out your day visually allows you to see how your time is being used and ensures you allocate enough time for each task.
- Take Regular Breaks: Breaks are essential for maintaining focus and preventing burnout. Incorporate short breaks in your routine to rest, recharge, and rejuvenate. Use these moments to stretch, meditate, or engage in activities unrelated to work. Just make sure that you don’t get distracted in the process. Set a timer and return back to working when your break time is over.
